POSITION TITLE: Senior Director, Archon X PRIZE for Genomics
DEPARTMENT: Prize Operations
REPORTS TO: VP, Prize Operations
DURATION: Full Time
LOCATION: Playa Vista, CA
X PRIZE FOUNDATION
The mission of the X PRIZE Foundation is to bring about radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity. We foster innovative, high-profile competitions that motivate individuals, companies and organizations across all boundaries to solve the grand challenges that are currently restricting humanity’s progress.
ARCHON X PRIZE FOR GENOMICS MANAGEMENT
The $10 million Archon X PRIZE for Genomics will be awarded to the first team that can build a device and use it to sequence 100 human genomes within 10 days or less and at a cost of no more than $10,000 per genome. Ultimately, affordable genome sequencing will allow for large population studies of afflicted disease groups, leading to new discoveries of disease/gene relationships. Results from population studies, in turn, allow for the development of new drugs and preventive treatments. Advocates of personalized medicine have stressed its potential to provide advanced screening of disease, select safer, more effective doses of medications and create better vaccines. Rapid, accurate human genome sequencing has the potential to make medicine preventative and predictive rather than reactive as it is today.
