Exploration is the cornerstone upon which the X PRIZE Foundation has been built. Following the success of the Ansari X PRIZE, and the more recently launched Google Lunar X PRIZE, the Foundation is looking for other areas to explore. The vision of the Exploration Vertical is to expand the use of space, the ocean and other unexplored frontiers to improve life on Earth and extend life beyond the confines of land. We believe we can achieve these objectives by researching space and Earth’s oceans, accessing and conserving their resources, catalyzing private, non-governmental activity and tapping into our innate wonder about the Earth, the Universe and our place within each.

Prizes under consideration:

The X PRIZE Foundation has received a grant to explore an Ocean X PRIZE Suite. The suite will likely focus on any or all of four target areas:

1. Oceanographic research: Inspiring a new or existing technology to widen our fundamental understanding of the oceans.
2. Oceanographic exploration: Developing new or existing technologies that significantly increase our ability to explore, gather information, and map the ocean’s depths.
3. Oceanographic conservation: Create innovative solutions and approaches that help preserve and conserve our planet’s largest ecological biosphere, in a way that is sustainable and scalable.
4. Oceanographic healing: Produce solutions and approaches that will regenerate and heal damaged areas of the oceans.
