Around the globe, chronic diseases (cardiovascular diseases, cancers, respiratory diseases, and diabetes) kill 38 million people annually. But, according to the World Health Organization, if the major risk factors for chronic diseases were eliminated, a significant portion of these diseases -- at least 80 percent of all cardiovascular diseases, at least 80 percent of type 2 diabetes, and more than 40 percent of cancers -- could be prevented.
The Personal Health XPRIZE will find and demonstrate methods for changing behavior that reduce or eliminate the most significant risk factors for chronic disease, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and overweight/obesity. Teams will consist of individuals across various demographics who will implement methods for changing their own behaviors and be tested for results using standard medical protocols. Multiple prize tracks will allow teams organized around workplaces, educational institutions, or other community organizations to compete against similar organizations. The winning team in each track will demonstrate the highest sustained improvement in risk factors for chronic disease over a period of 12-18 months.
