The X PRIZE Foundation is preparing to launch a new generation of X PRIZEs to address humanity's grand challenges. We currently have new X PRIZEs in development in the areas of space, energy (see spotlight below), medicine, education and the social arena. We intend to create radical breakthroughs in each of these fields, just as we did with personal spaceflight and the Ansari X PRIZE.

Each competition will engage X PRIZE entrants from across disciplines and around the globe to focus on a single problem, driving them, with no preconception of the solution, in pursuit of the prize.

Spotlight on:

The X PRIZE Foundation is developing the Energy & Environment Prize Suite to catalyze a new era of clean, renewable, cost-effective energy with minimal impact on climate and the environment. This effort will result in a suite of prizes with a combined purse value of as much as $100 million. Each prize will seek dramatic, short-term breakthroughs in a critical area.

The project will start with a nine-month process to select the best prize targets. The first two prizes have been determined:
(1) The Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE, which seeks to inspire ultra-efficient passenger vehicles;
(2) The Biofuels X PRIZE, which seeks to engender next-generation, decentralized, sustainable liquid transportation fuels.

Additional prize targets will be chosen as part of the Energy X PRIZE Suite from areas such as carbon capture, solar, water, sustainable housing and other categories of interest.

The X PRIZE Foundation's energy planning work is assisted by an Advisory Council made up of some of the world's most esteemed experts. They suggest areas of focus, screen concepts, review proposed rules, and recommend ways to link the prizes into a powerful, synergistic sequence. Our Advisory Council spans thought leaders from academia, advocacy, industry, media, finance, and philanthropy.
