Iron Man XPRIZE

Giving the Progressively Disabled Back their Independence

According to a 2011 World Health Organization report, “More than one billion people in the world live with some form of disability, of whom nearly 200 million experience considerable difficulties in functioning. In the years ahead, disability will be an even greater concern because its prevalence is on the rise. This is due to aging populations and the higher risk of disability in older people as well as the global increase in chronic health conditions.”

The Iron Man XPRIZE: will challenge competing teams over approximately four years to make exponential advances across four different domains of assistive technology: mobility, manipulation, communication, and respiration. It’s humans and machines working together.

The Prize:

  • Estimated duration: 4 years
  • $15 million in Prize Purse
  • IMPACT: Millions of people around the world with debilitating diseases such as ALS, Multiple Sclerosis, and Parkinson’s, as well as Stroke victims, the aging, veterans and trauma victims could benefit from breakthroughs in assistive technologies.

What's Next

Excited by securing validation for the "Iron Man" design concept and earning placement as a top team at Visioneers 2016, Caterpillar has generously pledged $10 million towards the operating costs of an "Iron Man" XPRIZE.

Over the next few months, the finishing touches will be put on the “Iron Man” prize design; simultaneously, fundraising efforts will be put in place to secure the prize purse for a proposed launch in 2017.
