Evolving Democracy

Our grand challenge is nothing less than saving democracy and preserving and strengthening self-government. If we want to empower people to be the center of change, then their voices have to count. Democratic systems around the world are being threatened both internally and externally. Onerous voter ID processes, fake news, the influence of money in the election process, corruption in government, and gerrymandering are all threats eroding faith in democracy.

We are determined to provide an XPRIZE road map that addresses these threats, beginning with the foundation of any functioning democracy—the ability for every eligible citizen to vote and to trust and verify that their vote has been counted. An XPRIZE that ensures the true voice of citizens is heard.

“Democracy at its birth in any country is massively transformational. But with the passage of time, every democracy becomes transactional as money and interests become more entrenched. The great question is can a transactional democracy become transformational anew? Only if we put people at the center of change and only if we make their voice count.”

Few challenges facing the United States—and the world—are more urgent than defending democracy. The intrinsic impetuses of equality and liberty from which democracy originally arose are at stake thanks to an insecure and unreliable election infrastructure. This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for zealous and dogged action. Sophia is excited to join a community of optimism, revolution, and disruption that will rise to this challenge.
